Lauri Ståhlberg, developer of the Tutorised and doctoral researcher, believes it is important to identify reading difficulties at an early stage and ensure that those who need support receive the help they need.
Tutorised resembles a strainer
The sieve analogy is apt because most of the material passes through the sieve, but larger pieces remain in the sieve. Similarly, in the Tutorised, students whose reading skills are clearly below the age level remain in the sieve.
Tutorised measures both technical reading skills and text comprehension
Tutorised technical reading comprehension tasks measure, among other things, reading fluency, reading accuracy, word recognition, vocabulary, and syllabification skills.
Various reading comprehension tasks measure the ability to summarize and title a text, draw conclusions from a text, distinguish important information from irrelevant information, and remember the content of a text.
Girls are superior readers compared to boys
It is true that girls read better than boys on average. This result is repeated in both Tutorised assessments and international reading literacy comparisons.
The Tutorised results also highlight the impact of socioeconomic background on literacy: in areas with high unemployment, a high proportion of rental housing, low levels of education, and a large number of foreign-language speakers, the average literacy level of students is lower.
In addition, the literacy skills of students studying the S2 curriculum are weaker than those of students studying Finnish as their mother tongue.
Using Tutorised increases equality
Using the assessment tool promotes equality. Education providers are required to assess, for example, how successful literacy teaching has been. Tutorised is a tool for this purpose. Tutorised produces reports on assessments at the student, school, class, and municipal levels.
By using the assessment tool, schools and municipalities can develop, for example, support aimed at strengthening literacy skills and targeting S2 teaching in a more appropriate direction.
Tutorised pinpoints reading difficulties
Tutorised is a digital reading assessment tool. It is used to assess the technical reading skills and text comprehension of elementary school students and to identify reading difficulties. Tutorised shows where reading problems occur. It also provides information about skilled readers. The tasks are suitable for all grades in primary school. Tutorised also includes a spelling test to assess writing skills and a math test to assess mathematical skills.
